How clean is 40 Bay Street Bed & Breakfast?
How clean is it? Well former guests have said on TripAdvisor that we rate 5/5 for cleanliness, so I think that’s pretty good.
However, cleanliness can come at a cost – and to much more than just the pocketbook.
Did you know there are over 70,000 chemicals commercially produced today? Chemical sensitivity is defined as a reaction to small doses of chemicals contained in air, food, and water. Since most of the chemicals used in cleaning products have been created since World War II, and more and more chemicals being used, the number of people dealing with sensitivities has increased dramatically.
Our goal is to make each and every guest who stays at 40 Bay Street B&B special, including those with mild sensitivities. With four bathrooms to clean on a daily basis, we try to use the following ingredients whenever possible:
Vinegar – breaks up dirt, deodorizes and disinfects. We use this on all glass and chrome surfaces. Vinegar can also be used as a fabric softener
Baking and/or washing soda are good for scrubbing and deodorizing
Essential oils – such as lemon (to add a nice smell) or tea tree or thuja oil (for disinfecting)
Steam cleaner for surfaces that need to be properly sanitized – we in the kitchen and bathrooms
Microfiber cloths to pick up dust, etc; can be used and washed for re-use.

As an organic gardener, my favourite recipe is for weed-killer is:
4 cups of vinegar (horticultural is best, but difficult to get) + 2 tablespoons of salt + 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap (to help it stay on the plant when you spray)
However, it will kill everything it touches, so use it carefully!
