Winter is wonderful in Parry Sound (January 2015)

Welcome to 2015! The weather since January 1st has certainly made up for the green Christmas we experienced in Parry Sound. Wesnowmobile have experienced significant snowfall and cold temperatures, which means that winter sports are ready to roll!

Georgian Nordic Ski Club has over 30 kms of groomed ski trails for performance (combined classic and skate), back country and single track trails plus snowshoe trails. (Ski rentals are available). Women on Skiis is taking place on January 25th. This is an annual event that provides a day of lessons, activity and fun for females only. A few Sunday afternoons are dedicated to fat biking – or biking on packed snow trails on bikes with – you guessed it! – fat tires on the bikes!

Parry Sound is home to Snowmobile District 10 and offers over 1100 km of looping or family trails along with several Trans Ontario Provincial (TOP) Trails. The warm weather and lack of snow made it difficult to groom trails before now, but as of this weekend (January 9th) the trails are open for riding!

Don’t forget to get your pass, and watch for markers and thin ice (Ice should be at least 6 inches thick to bear the weight of snowmobiles!) If you need to rent a ride, check out Rosseau Road Powersports and Marine

Now the ice is 4 inches (or thicker on the smaller lakes), icefishing huts are appearing. Typically, you can catch walleye, pike, crappie and bass. Check out an earlier blog post we wrote on icefishing for more details. And watch this blog and our Facebook page for announcements about local tournaments.

White Squall Paddling Centre is offering guided snowshoe tours on the 11th and 18th, from 1:30 until 4:00. They also offer “Squall on the Fly” on Twitter (@wspaddling) and Facebook – short impromptu outings on Cole Lake.  Kicksleds are available for you to try out – or, bring your own skis. There is no charge for these activities, but donations to the Squall Outer Isle Project are always welcome.

Looking for some indoor fun? The Stockey Centre is showing the TIFF film “Big News from Grand Rock” on January 15th and a concert by Big Sugar on January 21st.
