Pets at 40 Bay Street Bed & Breakfast
We quite often get asked if guests can bring their pets (generally dogs) with them. And, for people who have allergies, their first question is "Do you have any pets or allow pets?" Again, our answer is no.
It's not that we don't like animals - prior to moving to Parry Sound, we had a cat - and a lot of other B&Bs in the area do have pets.
However, there are several reasons why pets are not allowed.
While your pet may be well behaved at home, they may get agitated and start barking when a raccoon or other animal wanders through the backyard at night.
Other guests may have allergies, and ensuring pet dander is out of all the linens and rugs is very time consuming and expensive.
And finally, 40 Bay Street B&B doesn't have a fenced in yard to let your pet go free in...and it's not fair to coup an animal up in the house all the time!
Does this violate the rights of people who use service animals?
While there are laws that address access for service each law is different in its coverage - some laws apply only to dogs and some only protect people with certain disabilities. The form of proof needed to receive legal protection also varies.
According to Bill 125 - The Ontarians with Disabilities Act, bed and breakfasts are exempt from providing service to people with guide dogs.
There are several reasons for this – but the main one is that we operate our B&Bs out of our private homes, therefore the general public does not have access to our premises; so we do not need to allow service animals to stay.
The other exemption provided to B&Bs is that unless the business is registered as a corporation (which automatically makes the owner an employee), sole owners and partnerships are exempt under the law.
However, Parry Sound does have places that accept service animals AND pets, and we are always pleased to help you find the best place for you to stay. Drop us an e-mail or give us a call, and we will be glad to refer you to most suitable place for you to stay.
