What’s Up in Parry Sound This Month? (June, 2015)

While many people consider the May long weekend as the official start to summer, Parry Sounders know better! canoes

Our official start is on June 1st at 1:00 p.m., when the blast of the Island Queen’s horn announces her first cruise of the year. Due to our long and very cold winter, Georgian Bay temperatures out on the Bay are only 4 degrees C, so if you plan on going, dress in layers so you can comfortably spend time out on the deck.

June 5 – 14th is National Paddling Week, and in addition to White Squall Paddling Centre, which is open 7 days a week and offers free opportunities to try out paddling, there are two special events happening in Parry Sound.

National Paddling Week is kicked off with WoW – Women on Water – June 5 - 7th.  an annual event hosted by Ontario Sea Kayak Centre.  From beginners to advanced paddlers, this women-only skills weekend is an empowering and fun experience.

Paddling Week ends with the 14th Annual Parry Sound Scotiabank Dragon Boat Festival on June 13th. This one day event raises money for the charity or non-profit of your choice – or local Rotary Club. Besides the actual races, you will have an opportunity to meet Mickey & Pete, Parry Sound’s very own the Amazing Race Canada Champions, and listen to great music. There are also activities to keep children busy. Outrigger races (canoes with one or more lateral support floats fastened to one or both sides of the main hull) will be on the Sunday, June 14.

Not to be outdone, the Stockey Centre plays host to some big names – on June 5th “Lunch at Allen’s” features Murray McLaughlin, Cindy Church, Ian Thomas and Marc Jordan. You can also buy tickets there to attend Blue Rodeo at the Bobby Orr Community Centre on June 26th

Bands on the Bay begin Tuesdays, starting June 9th. This free summer concert series is held outside on the beautiful deck of the Stockey Centre (or inside if it rains). You can also have a drink and a light dinner during the event to make a full evening of it. There is no better place in Parry Sound to watch the sunset!

And finally, the Summer Market opens on June 30th. Featuring original designs and handmade gifts created by of local artists and craftspeople, there is definitely something for everyone at the market.
